Adrenal hormone that the body converts into testosterone and estrogen; levels fall with age. In a 2-year trial in older adults with low levels, DHEA didn't improve body composition, strength, fitness or insulin sensitivity. In postmenopausal women, 50 mg/day or more raises testosterone and estrogen.
Also known as: Dehydroepiandrosterone, Prasterone

Medications & health conditions
DHEA raises estrogen and testosterone. The body converts DHEA into sex hormones, and trials show it raises both. Avoid with a current or past hormone-sensitive cancer unless your oncologist agrees.
Avoid DHEA in pregnancy. DHEA is a hormone that raises testosterone and estrogen and hasn't been studied for safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
DHEA changes hormone test results. It raises measured testosterone and estradiol. Tell whoever orders your blood test that you take it.
