Can you take Calcium and Iron together?
Not at the same time — take them at least 2 hours apart if you are supplementing iron to correct a deficiency.
What to do: Take iron in the morning on an empty stomach and calcium with dinner. Separate by at least 2 hours.
Calcium reduces iron absorption from the same meal
In single-meal studies, 300–600 mg of calcium lowered non-heme and heme iron absorption by up to ~50–60%. The exact mechanism is still debated (it is not simple competition for DMT1). Long-term studies show little effect on iron status in healthy people, so this matters most when you are treating low iron.
Evidence level: Strong evidence — Randomized trials or authoritative reviews (e.g. NIH ODS).

What to look for on the label
Form and quality matter as much as dose.
Calcium
- • Calcium citrate (absorbs with or without food)
- • Calcium carbonate (cheaper, must be taken with food)
Iron
- • Iron bisglycinate (gentler on the stomach)
- • Check the label for elemental iron, not the salt weight
