Curcumin — timing, dose & interactions

Main active compound in turmeric, with anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Rapidly conjugated in the gut and liver, so bioavailability is the main problem.

Also known as Turmeric extract

Timing

When to take it

Take with a fat-containing meal. Plain curcumin is poorly absorbed unless enhanced.

Interactions

Curcumin with other supplements

Safety

Medications & health conditions

CautionBlood thinners

Curcumin may increase bleeding risk. Curcumin has antiplatelet effects, and case reports describe raised INR in people on warfarin.

Human data
NoteDiabetes medication

Curcumin may lower blood sugar. Possible additive effect with diabetes medication. Monitor glucose.

Mechanism-based
CautionCancer treatment

Antioxidants may interfere with cancer treatment. Some chemotherapy and radiation work partly through oxidative damage; high-dose antioxidants could reduce their effect. Discuss every supplement with your oncology team.

Mechanism-based
CautionPregnant or breastfeeding

Curcumin supplements may not be safe in pregnancy. Culinary turmeric is fine; supplement doses have not been shown to be safe.

Mechanism-based
CautionLiver disease

Rare liver injury reported with turmeric supplements. Most cases involved high-bioavailability or piperine-enhanced products.

Human data
CautionSurgery in the next 2 weeks

Stop curcumin before surgery. Antiplatelet effects — commonly paused 2 weeks before surgery.

FAQ

Common questions

When is the best time to take Curcumin?

Lunch or Dinner. Take with a fat-containing meal. Plain curcumin is poorly absorbed unless enhanced.

Should Curcumin be taken with food?

Yes. It is fat-soluble, so take it with a meal that contains some fat.

Can you take Curcumin with Iron?

Probably fine for most people, but separate them if you are treating low iron. If you are iron-deficient, keep curcumin at least 2 hours away from iron.

Can you take Curcumin with Piperine?

Yes — take them at the same time; that is the whole point of the pairing. Take in the same dose, with a fat-containing meal. If you take prescription drugs, check with a pharmacist first — or choose a piperine-free enhanced curcumin (phytosome, micellar).
