Can you take Iron and Zinc together?
ConflictHuman data
Better apart — separate by about 2 hours, especially if taken on an empty stomach.
What to do: Take iron on an empty stomach in the morning and zinc with a later meal.
Zinc and iron compete when taken together without food
When zinc and iron are given together in water (no meal), high zinc-to-iron ratios reduce iron absorption, likely through shared uptake pathways. The effect is much smaller when both are taken with food.
Evidence level: Human data — Human pharmacokinetic, cohort or case-series data.

What to look for on the label
Form and quality matter as much as dose.
Iron
- • Iron bisglycinate (gentler on the stomach)
- • Check the label for elemental iron, not the salt weight
Zinc
- • Zinc picolinate, bisglycinate or citrate
- • If you take ≥25 mg daily long-term, choose a formula that includes 1–2 mg copper
