Minerals

Zinc — timing, dose & interactions

Essential cofactor for hundreds of enzymes involved in immunity, wound healing, DNA synthesis and taste. Long-term high doses induce intestinal metallothionein, which traps copper.

Timing

When to take it

Take with a meal — zinc on an empty stomach commonly causes nausea.

Dose note. Adult UL for total zinc intake (food + supplements).

Interactions

Zinc with other supplements

Safety

Medications & health conditions

CautionTetracycline or quinolone antibiotics

Zinc blocks absorption of these antibiotics. Zinc binds tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics in the gut, which can make the antibiotic less effective. Take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after zinc.

FAQ

Common questions

When is the best time to take Zinc?

Dinner. Take with a meal — zinc on an empty stomach commonly causes nausea.

Should Zinc be taken with food?

Yes. Taking it with a meal reduces stomach upset.

Can you take Zinc with Copper?

Yes — in fact, anyone taking higher-dose zinc long-term should usually get some copper too. Keep total zinc at or below 40 mg/day unless supervised. If you take ≥25 mg daily for months, use a formula that includes 1–2 mg copper (roughly a 10–15:1 ratio). Spacing doses apart does not prevent this effect.

Can you take Zinc with Iron?

Better apart — separate by about 2 hours, especially if taken on an empty stomach. Take iron on an empty stomach in the morning and zinc with a later meal.

Can you take Zinc with Magnesium?

Yes — this only matters at very high zinc doses. Keep zinc within the 40 mg/day upper limit.

Can you take Zinc with Calcium?

Yes — the effect is small at typical doses. No action needed for most people. If you are correcting a zinc deficiency, take them with different meals.
